Hobbies/Interests
there are a number of things I do in my spare time, and things I take interest in. Below is a list of them:
- Antique Tractors - I currently own a fleet of 4 antique tractors - a Farmall H, Farmall M, Farmall Cub, and Allis Chalmers C. The H is a functional tractor with a loader, the other 3 are in various states of repair.
- Antique Garden Tractors - I currently own a fleet of 9 antique garden tractors - a Cub Cadet "Original", 70, 106, 107, and 147, as well as a John Deere 111, Massey Ferguson 10, and a pair of National triplex reel mowers. Garden tractors were what got me started fixing stuff, beginning with my Cub Cadet 107, which will always be my favorite.
- Antique Gas Engines - I have a very large fleet of antique gasoline powered engines and equipment, just about anything, any size from little nitro r/c airplane engines up to hit and miss engines and multi cylinder Wisconsin Engines. I mainly focus on 4 cycle engines though I have a few 2 cycle engines hanging around including a Maytag washing machine engine. My favorite engine brand would be Clinton, and my favorite engine of my collection is probably my Nelson Brothers hit and miss engine that I rescued from the swamp down the street.
- Model Tractors - I have been collecting toy/model tractors since I was approximately 1 year old. I have currently probably around 200 models in various scales, though my main focuses are 1/16 and 1/64. I do not collect any specific brand of tractors though International Harvester is my favorite. I have many different models new and old, though as of recently I like to stick to older and vintage models.
- Model Trucks (Winross) - I have been collecting model trucks for a few years now. My main focus when collecting is a brand known as Winross. While they are no longer made today, Winross truck models are regarded as America's most collectible truck models. I have currently somewhere around 80 trucks, and a preference towards the earlier made ones (~1965-1970) though with Winross they were all made in the USA right to the end of production. Winross trucks were made right in Rochester NY, and were entirely made of metal besides the rubber tires.
- Model Trains (Varney) - as the rest of this website would suggest, I have a love for model trains and model railroading as well. My focus is, of course, mainly on the brand Varney, of which I currently have about 50 locomotives. But I am not specifically partial to Varney, I have a fair amount of other models from other manufacturers including some old postwar era O gauge. My specific focus is vintage models, I do not own any models older than from the 90s, and the majority of my collection is 1960 and prior. I take pride in doing my own repairs and work to my models, and I love taking an old model that hasn't worked in years and get it going again just as it would have when it was new. I don't do modern motor swaps or any crazy electronics, just the basics of model railroading, just like it used to be.
- Real Trains - I of course also have interest in real trains. Though not really modern trains, I have a great love for the old steam and diesel locomotives. My main interest lies in the Arcade and Attica, a small short line in western NY featuring #18, the only operational steam locomotive in the entire state.
- Piston Engines - I take interest in just about anything powered by a piston engine. Though like usual for me, I tend to favor older examples. This includes gas, diesel and steam engines. I like aircraft engines (especially radial engines), 2 cycle diesels (Detroit Diesel), also valveless 2 cycle diesels, and other large stationary engines (Fairbanks Morse). Large boat/ship engines also tend to fall into those categories. Big engines are just cool.
- Music - I love listening to music. I use both vinyl records and CDs, as well as the good old FM radio. My main music taste is country (new and old) and classic rock.
- Antique Parts + Literature/Packaging - I have a certain love for antique new old stock parts for engines, machines, etc as well as the original packaging or literature/user manuals for them. I have a decent collection of various vintage part packages as well as a bunch of manuals for various things like farm equipment.
- Photography - I am anything but a professional photographer, but I love taking photos of things. From my own projects to things I see that I think are cool, I have thousands of photos of tractors, trucks, engines, and various other pieces of equipment and things I find cool.
- Urban Exploration - To add to photography, I enjoy occasionally finding abandoned places to explore and document.
- Gaming - I occasionally play some video games. I have a particular interest in sandbox style games, such as Minecraft. I also occasionally play American Trucking Simulator and BeamNG Drive.
- Various other things - I am probably forgetting something. There are also many other small trinkets and things here and there that I like to collect. Things that are not as much my main focus but that I still enjoy. This includes Lego, and model cars, among other things.
